The Military Telecom Corporation (Viettel) inaugurated its Metfone service network in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on February 19. The network is managed by the Viettel-Cambodia Pte. Ltd, a Viettel subsidiary in the country.

At the inauguration ceremony, Viettel’s Director General Hoang Anh Xuan thanked the Cambodian Government for having supported the company in expanding its operations into the market, which also helps promote economic development and improve local residents’ living standards.

At the event, the Viettel head presented US$5 million to the Cambodian Minister of Education, Young People and Sports, Im Sethy, to help the country install free broadband internet transmission lines in 1,000 of the country’s schools. The project will be carried out over the next five years.

Established in June 2007, the Viettel-Cambodia Pte. Ltd has successfully installed over 1,000 broadcasting posts and 5,000 km of cables, covering all 24 Cambodian provinces and cities.

The company plans to install an additional 1,500 posts and 5,000 km of cable this year to extend its coverage to Cambodia’s remote villages and islands, creating 700 jobs for local workers.
