Man held over heroin smuggling bid in Cambodia

A Hong Kong man has been arrested at Cambodia's main airport for trying to smuggle more than 800 grams of heroin out of the southeast Asian nation.

Lo Ching-hang, 22, was detained at Phnom Penh International Airport after police carried out a body search and found the drugs strapped around his waist, airport police chief Chhour Kimny said.

The man was trying to board a morning flight to Guangzhou.

If convicted he faces a maximum term of life imprisonment.

Although drug arrests have increased, Cambodia is becoming an increasingly popular trafficking point for methamphetamines and heroin, particularly since neighbouring Thailand toughened its stance against illegal drugs in 2002.
