The ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) on Tuesday dismissed plans for an opposition alliance and accused opposition parties of nepotism.
Kem Sokha, Human Rights Party (HRP) leader, at a Tuesday afternoon press conference called on other opposition to cooperate to form a democratic movement to compete in the 2012-13 election campaign.
"I express my party policy and call on members of other democratic parties to jointly create a new party to compete in the 2012 election," Kem Sokha said.
"If we don't come to the table for discussions to find a middle way for policies, we cannot compete with the CPP in the next election," he added. Government spokesman and Information Minister Khieu Kanharith accused the opposition of nepotism. "Their leaders are relatives," he told DAP News Cambodia. "Actually, some want to join, but when we look, we see that most of them are relatives with another."
Keo Sovannaroth, Sam Rainsy Party Secretary-General, on Tuesday could not comment on the planned opposition alliance details as she is waiting to talk with the HRP leader.
Koul Panha, director of election watchdog Comfrel, on Tuesday said that an opposition alliance would need fluid cooperation to contend with the CPP in the next election.
