HO CHI MINH CITY – Cambodia’s U23 national team, spending a month at a training camp in Vietnam in preparation for the four-team tournament in Phnom Penh in early November and the Southeast Asian Games in Laos in December, tasted success Thursday in their first arranged friendly against local opposition. A goal by full-back Pheak Rady on 35 minutes proved decisive in a 1-0 victory over recently relegated Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), pleasing national coach Scott O’Donell. “I was quite happy with the performance of the team, particularly in the first half,” O’Donell said. “The only real chances HCMC had were a result of our sloppiness. The boys were disciplined and worked very hard. Still a long way to go, but considering I have been working them hard in training, the performance [Thursday] was encouraging. I made eight changes throughout the second half, which obviously disrupted things a bit, but overall I was quite happy.”

BANGKOK – The situation of Cambodian U16 national team became even worse Sunday, after a 11-0 demolition by South Korea in their AFC 2010 qualifier in Bangkok. The South Koreans blasted in six goals in the first half, including three in the last three minutes. The second half started with even more misery for the Cambodian youngsters, with substitute Kang Tae Woong scoring in his first minute of play, Hwang Sin Young completing his hat trick a minute later, and Cambodian defender Soun Rotha conceding an own goal. With a negative goal difference of 19 from their first two games, Cambodia are dead last in Group G, while North Korea lead following a 5-1 drubbing of Myanmar. Hosts Thailand drop to third after losing 1-0 to Vietnam. A slight respite is that the Philippines in Group E and Macau in Group F boast worse goal difference (-25 and -48 respectively), although both teams have scored a goal. Cambodia next face Vietnam at the Royal Thai Army Stadium on Wednesday.
