Brief: NOCC plan chess comp

Vath Chamroeun, general secretary of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC), announced a plan to organise the second national Cambodian chess championship during a press conference Friday. According to the official, the event may be held in December after the SEA Games in Laos. “We need to see the best players joining the championship, especially the ones from villages and communes,” he stated, adding that Cambodian chess is one of the most popular games in the Kingdom. Vath Chamroeun also expressed the ambition of the NOCC to stage regional chess competitions against neighbouring countries. “We have already contacted our partners in Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Sri Lanka. They have supported our initiative because they also want to show their players on the international scene,” he said.

In Brief: Aviation audit begins

THE International Civil Aviation Organisation began a three-day audit of Cambodian civil aviation Monday that officials hope will return a satisfactory verdict after the previous one last year led to the grounding of Siem Reap Airways last November. State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA) Secretary of State Mao Havannal said Monday that the results of the audit would not be known until Thursday. SSCA Director of Policy Planning, Legislation and Cooperation Sinn Chanserey Vutha said last week that he expected a “not excellent but satisfactory” pass mark from the United Nations-linked aviation body.

In Brief: Products shown in Tokyo

CAMBODIA is about to end its participation in a two-month ASEAN trade fair in Tokyo, where companies have displayed a range of agricultural products, said a Ministry of Commerce official. Finishing at the end of this month, the event seeks to attract Japanese buyers, said Kith Pheara, chief of the Product Development Office at the ministry. “Japanese buyers were interested in our palm whisky … and were complimentary on packaging, saying it could be accepted in the Japanese market,” he said, adding there was also considerable interest in Cambodian jelly products.
