ABOUT 20 units of 36 planned for a US$1 million residential development in Kandal province’s Kien Svay district earmarked for government officials have been pre-bought, according to developer Thong Sarath. Houses in the 5,000-square-metre site in Veal Sbov commune were priced between $30,000 and $35,000, he said. Buyers were also given Camry vehicles valued at around $8,000. Thong Sarath said he did not expect to make a profit on the development but was hoping to make a good return on a similar, larger development planned for Phnom Penh’s Meanchey district.

MOBILE-phone operators were told at a meeting with the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications on Friday to report back to the government in two weeks with details of their operating costs and profits, a source with knowledge of the meeting said. The meeting was part of efforts to resolve a price war that the government says is destabilising the sector and costing the government tax revenues. The ministry said it hopes to use the cost information to set a minimum tariff for calls in the sector, though it is not clear whether that will be imposed by the government or must be decided among operators.
