THE condition of Senate President Chea Sim has stabilised, but he remains hospitalised in Singapore, Prime Minister Hun Sen said Monday.

“His health condition is normal now,” Hun Sen said in a speech during the opening of the first phase of the Kamchay hydroelectric dam in Kampot on Monday. “So do not worry about his health.”

Chea Sim, who is also the president of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party, was transported to Singapore this weekend for emergency treatment after he experienced circulation problems, a government spokesperson said, adding that the 77-year-old has suffered from high blood pressure for years.

Hun Sen said he and other CPP officials visited Chea Sim in a Phnom Penh hospital recently and urged him to seek treatment in Singapore.

“I do not want anyone to be in turmoil about the health of [Chea Sim],” Hun Sen said. “The members of the party worry when hearing information about the illness of their leader, but I suggest they do not worry about that.”

Earlier this year, Chea Sim’s wife, Nhem Soeun, passed away at the age of 71. In a statement after her death, Hun Sen referred to Nhem Soeun as a “Khmer heroine” who was “full of willingness, conscience and intellect, which she dared to sacrifice for the Cambodian people”.
