Man accused of chopping stepson
A man allegedly chopped his 18-year-old stepson with a knife, seriously injuring him, while the young man was watching TV alone. It happened Monday in Battambang province. The suspect, 50, said he attacked his stepson because the youth would always hit him when the father was drunk. A witness corroborated the man’s claim, saying the stepson would always fight the man whenever the man was drunk. Following the attack, the stepson was sent to hospital with what police described as serious injuries.

Man hangs self after booze bender
A 24-year-old man from Phnom Penh’s Russey Keo district hanged himself with a long shirt following a night of drinking this week. The reason for the man’s apparent suicide remains unclear, although conflicting stories are emerging of the man’s married life. The man’s wife said she never argued with her husband, while the man’s grandfather instead claimed the couple often bickered and even filed a case in court.

Woman stabbed in rape attempt
A 27-year-old carpenter was arrested for allegedly breaking into the room of a woman he claimed was his former girlfriend and attempting to rape her. The man was arrested Sunday, after which he claimed to police that he tried to sleep with the woman because he once had a close relationship with her. But now, he told investigators, she only seems to ignore him. The woman, however, told police the man was never her boyfriend. Police said the woman managed to fight off the man and called for help from people nearby, but she was stabbed with a screwdriver and sent to hospital for her injuries.

Police arrest woman with gigantic debts
A 45-year-old woman who was a member of a tongtin scheme, an informal banking and lending system, was arrested in the capital this week, accused of fleeing with US$140,000 in money from 36 other tongtin members. The woman told police she fled because she didn’t have enough money to pay back the other tongtin members. She claimed some of the members didn’t give her their $500 shares every month. The woman, who was arrested in Phnom Penh’s Phsar Thmey district, was sent to the city’s municipal court on Tuesday.

Police arrest would-be thief
A 24-year-old accused prowler was arrested after allegedly breaking into a woman’s house in Battambang province. Police immediately intervened to apprehend the man. However, four other men who were part of the group managed to escape. The man told police he broke into the house because he needed money to buy drugs.
