Million Land Titles Handed Out: Ministry

The Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction has distributed 1 million land titles to Cambodians, according to an MLMUP senior official on Thursday at a conference for their 2009 annual report.

The Minister, Im Chhunlim, the titles were handed to Cambodians in 263 communes of 48 districts.

The minister said some were distributed in Mondulkiri.

Deputy Prime Minister and Land Conflict Chief Coordinator Bin Chhin said that the problem of land disputes is affecting the poverty of Cambodians. He said land management is crucial in increasing food security.

Environmental, social and economic issues are all at stake, Chhin added.

The 2010 ministry strategy is to distribute land titles to at least 24 percent of the population, according to a report. The reports said that land titles will help reduce resolve land conflict.

General Director for the Land Management Sar Sovann told DAP News Cambodia that titles for about 30,000 ha were distributed to 8,000 families in western Cambodia.

Im Chhunlim announced that there will be a crackdown on illegal land encroachments.

UK, Cambodia Work on Education, HIV/AIDS

The UK government has focused on HIV/AIDS prevention and education with two projects working with Cambo-dian students, according to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports on Thursday.

MOEYS Minister Im Sithy said that “Through other projects, the UK government tried to support to Cambodia’s education sector.”

The UK government has supported the English Learning Course, CAMSET and a second fighting against HIV/AIDS in Cambodia, he added.

The Cambodian government has set a goal to boost rural development and human resources 2009-2013, educating both children and adults, and raising the number of qualified people, he stressed.

Im Sithy said that the ministry will examine the results of its work 2006-2010 before deciding upon a strategy 2009-2013.

UK Ambassador to Cambodia Andrew Mace said that Cambodia and the UK government are cooperating well to boost education in the kingdom. He pledged to continue educational aid to Cambodian students.
