A cruise along the Mekong River could be the ideal way for a gap year traveller to journey between Cambodia and Vietnam.

Writing for the Daily Telegraph, Clare Mann described the adventure as fascinating and often surprising.

The reporter noted her cruise began at Siem Reap and was to last around a week as the vessel she was aboard set sail on a 560-mile trip to Saigon.

Before boarding, Ms Mann took time to visit the "wondrous" temples and ruins of Angkor Wat, which also included the Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm structures.

Back on the water, she observed the views included fishermen casting their nets, "picturesque houses" on stilts, new pagodas and even youngsters taking rides on the back of buffalo.

A similar adventure was recently recommended by Daily Mail journalist Amy Watkins, who sailed down the Mekong River on La Marguerite, which transports passengers between Siem Reap and Ho Chi Minh.
