Samneang stuns friend

Monday, 19 July 2010 15:00 H S Manjunath

Promising junior Long Samneang caused a flutter at the Cham Prasidh Cup Tennis Championships when he knocked out his practice partner and second seed Orn Sambath 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in their men’s singles second round match at the National Training Centre (NTC) yesterday. Long Samneang trains under local coach Chea Poev at the NTC, and was Sambath’s travelling companion when the two competed in the Thailand circuit under national coach Braen Aneiros a fortnight ago. Familiarty with each other’s game is what made the first two sets tight, but a mid-match crisis saw Sambath commit a host of unforced errors. Meanwhile, top seeded Bun Kenny, richer by his recent Malaysian Circuit experience, disposed of Mak Brandon without dropping a game. But the match of the day for its sheer intensity and length came in the U14 Juniors division. Doum Sambath took close to three hours and three fiercely-contested sets to wrap up his second round victory over Chheang Wannasak 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.
