Indian President Meets Cambodian Leaders

Phnom Penh, September 15, 2010 AKP -- Visiting President of the Republic of India, Mrs. Pratibha Devisingh Patil met here on Sept. 14 at the Royal Palace with Cambodian leaders.

In a royal audience with His Majesty Sihamoni, King of Cambodia, both sides agreed to further foster the ties of friendship, the solidarity, the fraternity and the bilateral cooperation between the two countries, according to the National Television of Cambodia (TVK).

In a separate meeting with Senate President Samdech Akka Moha Thamma Pothisal Chea Sim and National Assembly President Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei Heng Samrin, Mrs. Pratibha Devisingh Patil thanked the Cambodian leaders and people for their warm welcome to her visit. She also praised the Cambodian leaders for their efforts in building and developing the country. She further affirmed that India is planning to send investors to invest in Cambodia and to increase the cooperation with the Kingdom in the fields of human resource development and tourism.

In reply, Samdech Chea Sim and Samdech Heng Samrin highly evaluated the Indian president’s visit, which, they said, will contribute to further strengthening and expanding the long-lasting cooperation between Cambodia and India. They expressed deep thanks to the Republic of India for its assistance to Cambodia’s development.

On the same day, the visiting Indian president also held talks with Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen.

Mrs. Pratibha Devisingh Patil highly appreciated the cooperation between India and Cambodia in all domains, particularly their mutual support, both in the regional and international frameworks. She also thanked Cambodia for helping India to become a close and equal cooperation partner with ASEAN in 2002 when Cambodia was chair of the ASEAN Summit.

For his part, the Cambodian premier thanked the Indian government and people for their assistance to the development of Cambodia. He said despites its development and economic growth, Cambodia still needs assistance from friendly countries, especially India.

Moreover, Samdech Techo Hun Sen asked India to consider helping Cambodia in searching for underground water sources so as to develop the country into a major rice exporter.

Both sides are determined to further consolidate and expand the cooperation between the two countries in all domains, mainly the oil, gas, mine, agriculture and tourism domains.

After the meeting, Samdech Techo Hun Sen and Mrs. Pratibha Devisingh Patil witnessed the signing ceremony of the US$15-million documents including the Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation between the National Audit Authority of Cambodia and the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, and the Agreement for Stung Tasal Water Resources Development Project (Phase 2) between the Royal Government of Cambodia and the Export-Import Bank of India.

President of the Republic of India, Mrs. Pratibha Devisingh Patil arrived here on Sept. 13 for a six-day state visit in Cambodia. --AKP

PM Welcomes Chinese Investment in Rice Mill

Phnom Penh, September 15, 2010 AKP -- A Chinese company from Guangxi province has decided to invest in rice processing in Cambodia.

The Guangxi Guohong Development Company is planning to invest US$5 million in setting up a rice mill in Kampong Chhnang province, some 90 kilometers northwest of Phnom Penh Capital City, Ieng Sophalèt, assistant to the Cambodian prime minister told reporters upon the meeting between the premier and Song Zhenxion, president of the Chinese company.

For the first step, the rice mill would produce about 100 tons of processed rice a day, Mr. Song Zhenxion said.

On the occasion, Mr. Song Zhenxion sought a recommendation from the Cambodian premier for the success of this investment plan.

In reply, Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen welcomed the plan and encouraged the Chinese company to work closely with Cambodian local farmers as well as to look for a location with a good irrigation system for farmers to plant rice for sale to the company.

The Royal Government of Cambodia has recently set 2015 as the year to increase the paddy production to over 4 million tons and to export at least 1 million tons of rice. --AKP

Eritrean Mine Delegation Meets Cambodian Mine Action Authority

Phnom Penh, September 15, 2010 AKP -- An Eritrean delegation of Mine Clearance Action has arrived in Cambodia to learn and exchange experiences with the Cambodian Mine Action Authority (CMAA).

The eight-member delegation led by Mr. Habtom Bairu, chief of Demining Quality Control was received here on Monday by H.E. Chum Bunrong, CMAA secretary general.

In the meeting, H.E. Chum Bunrong told the visiting Eritrean delegation that due to three decades of civil war, Cambodia was seriously impacted by mines and unexploded ordnance, of which 63,704 people had fallen victims.

Cambodian mine clearance teams have so far cleared over 595 million square kilometers of land from landmines and unexploded ordnance, destroyed 884,531 anti-personnel mines, 20,547 anti-tank mines and 1,992,209 unexploded ordnances.

For its part, the visiting Eritrean delegation thanked CMAA for sharing good experiences with the Eritrean side. --AKP

ILO Pledges More Support for Cambodia

Phnom Penh, September 15, 2010 AKP -- The International Labor Organization (ILO) will continue to support Cambodia in preparing the national policy on labor.

This was made known here on Sept. 14 by ILO official Mr. Bill Satter during a meeting with Cambodian Minister of Labor and Vocational Training H.E. Vong Sot.

In the meeting, Mr. Bill Satter said that ILO also wishes to provide more technical assistance to Cambodia.

In reply, H.E. Vong Sot thanked ILO for its cooperation and support to Cambodia, especially to the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training. --AKP

Japan Gives Cambodia Equipment for Mine Clearance and Victim Assistance

Phnom Penh, September 15, 2010 AKP -- Cambodian Mine Action Center (CMAC) has received installment of heavy demining machines from Japan for its implementation of an integrated mine clearance and victim assistance project in Cambodia, according to a statement released Tuesday by CMAC.

Chinese News Agency Xinhua quoted the statement as saying that CMAC senior management team and key staff from manufacturer inspected equipment received recently from Japanese Grant Aid for Conflict Prevention and Peace-building.

This is CMAC’s first integrated mine action project to be carried out which incorporates both demining and community development activities in Battambang province.

According to the statement, this three-year project, which commenced in January 2010, has a planned budge of about US$11 million including supply of equipment, and funds for mine clearance and community assistance.

CMAC is partnering with Japan International Cooperation System (JICS), to clear selected contaminated land in Battambang province and provide communities with safe access to land.

This project will also improve livelihoods in the area through sustainable development such as road and canal construction and the delivery of agricultural training. --AKP

CAMBOFOOD and CAMBOHOTEL International Expo To Be Held Soon

Phnom Penh, September 15, 2010 AKP -- The CAMBOFOOD and CAMBOHOTEL International Exhibition will be held at the Diamond Island Center in Phnom Penh on Oct. 21-23, 2010.

Mr. Andrew Siow, of exhibition-organizing international company of MAMB, told this to reporters at a press conference last week.

It is not an exhibition to sell the products for the public, but to draw businessmen concerning hotel, restaurant, and catering equipment and supplies industry, he said.

Over 200 exhibitors from over 20 countries have already been registered to attend the exhibition, he said.

Lou Meng, chairman of the Cambodian Hotels Association, gave special highlights in the event such as Cambodia national culinary competition, Cambodia cakes decoration competition, Cambodia bartender competition, wine appreciation classes / wine-tasting, conference on hospitality information systems and bed making / table setting / fruit carving.

The CAMBOFOOD and CAMBOHOTEL International Exhibition will be an exciting event with many competitions and special events to be held alongside the expo, mainly to focus on displaying the skills of top hospitality personnel.

The exhibition is organized by the Cambodian Hotels Association and the Cambodian Restaurants Association in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Commerce.

It is the biggest international “business-to-business” tradeshow for the “Hotel, Restaurant, Catering Equipment and Supplies” (HORECA) industry. --AKP
