BANGKOK, Tuesday 23 November 2010 (AFP) - Thailand Tuesday offered an initial 30,000 dollars in emergency aid to Cambodia following the deadly tragedy in which nearly 350 people were killed at popular water festival in Phnom Penh.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva also said his government was ready to provide support and assistance "to our friends in Cambodia," which shares a long border with Thailand.

"On behalf of the Thai government and the people of Thailand I wish to extend my sincere condolences and sympathy to you and through you to the bereaved families of the victims in this tragic incident," Abhisit said.

Many of the dead suffocated or were crushed after panic broke out on an overcrowded bridge late Monday as millions celebrated the end of an annual three-day event.

Thailand would offer its neighbour an initial 30,000 dollars in emergency aid, foreign ministry spokesman Thani Thongpakdi said.

Ties between Thailand and Cambodia have been strained since a long-running dispute over a border temple flared up in 2008.
